KIUMBES The perfect gift for your children
ARTWORKSHOP The Gift of Creating and the Happiness of Giving
We come to the realization that a self-centered lifestyle will not satisfy us. Therefore, we have decided to use the knowledge, abilities and possibilities that have been given to us for the benefit of other people.
PERSONAL STORIES AND OPINIONS
Moses Otunga, Kenya
When I visited slum Korogocho, I wanted to take a picture of the a new school. However, it was bigger than the others and it was difficult to find the right place for taking pictures. Moses saw it and told me: “Come along, I’ll show you the best place for taking pictures.” I followed him to a mass of rubbish, which was the only higher place around. We met a barefoot boy there. It was not difficult to guess that he lives on the street. He was friendly and Moses greeted him. “It is necessary to take care of the teenagers from the streets and give them a better future than prostitution, stealing and alcohol. We want to teach them a useful job. We have sewing lessons for girls, but for boys there is nothing at the moment. We still take care of them though.”
We entered a school building under construction. They have already had lessons in the wide-open and not finished classrooms. “We have here primary school and high school. On this floor there will be a social hall for rent. From the rent, we want to pay for the school. In this slum it will be an above standard school. We still need more money, but I believe we’ll finish the construction of the school building. We started to save and everything we have saved we are using for the school. When our friends saw it, they started to support us. People say that it is not possible to change life in the slum, and it is not possible to do big things. I would like to show them the way of change.” When we were leaving, we happened to meet some of the students. They were bringing the doors into their school. A sponsor donated them. I saw it and I believe that change is possible. You can see it too; just take a look at the gallery.
