Kenyan Diary
Countryside
Kenya is a beautiful land with a lot of fantastic places. My journey to Nyanza Province gave me the opportunity to learn more about the different regions of the countryside in Kenya. We went through different countryside. At first I could see a virgin forest, later on sharp escarpment with nice view into a large valley called Rift Valley. Rift Valley looks like Safari, there are wide flat plains with small bushes, acacia trees and high mountains on the horizon. After the plains came Maasai’s with a herd of their cattle in a cloud of dust. We saw herd of zebras and antelopes without the Maasai’s. We went on a marrum road. The road “was built” not long ago. Further we could see hills everywhere with fields of wheat and acacia trees growing in the middle of the small farms. The nice countryside was replaced by the ugly town Narok which was surrounded by groups of tall cactuses. You can find nothing in Narok town except a lot of dust that covers everything and everywhere. Other hills gradually grew into nice hilly areas with plenty of tea plantations. Later on we saw beautiful green valleys with rivers and banana trees and at the end we were invited by dry flat land with scattered small houses made of clay surrounded by agave trees as the fence. The rice was grown on water logged area a few kilometers from Lake Victoria and on the opposite side of the gulf were raised mountains.
